Chama Constitution Template (Kenya)

Every chama needs a written constitution — it is the document that defines your rules, protects your members and resolves disputes before they become arguments. This template covers the eight sections a Kenyan chama must have. Adapt the amounts and rules to your group, then have all members sign it.

Why every chama needs a written constitution

  • • A Magistrate's Court will not recognise a chama dispute without written rules to refer to
  • • Banks and mobile lenders often require a signed constitution before opening a group account
  • • It prevents the "but we agreed" argument — everything is written down
  • • The Societies Act requires registered societies to have a constitution on file

Tips before you sign

Read it aloud at a meeting

Go through each clause with all members present. Disagreements are cheaper to fix before signing than after.

Keep two signed originals

One stays with the Secretary, one goes to the Treasurer. Store a scanned copy in a shared Google Drive folder.

Set realistic contribution amounts

The most common reason chamas collapse is contributions set too high. Start conservative — you can always increase them.

Review it every year

Put a constitution review on the AGM agenda. Rules that made sense in year one may not suit a larger or richer group.

Put your constitution into practice

Chamabora enforces your rules automatically — the dual-confirmation workflow, loan eligibility checks and contribution tracking are all built in. Free for groups of up to 10 members.
